The Third Fiji Tourism Convention recently wrapped up successfully at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Nadi’s Denarau Island. Organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, this significant event convened tourism leaders from government, industry, communities, and development partners to discuss and shape the future of Fiji’s tourism sector.
In his opening address, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, underscored the importance of tourism to Fiji’s economy, highlighting its role in providing employment, fostering enterprise development, and enhancing the livelihoods of island communities. Mr. Gavoka acknowledged that the tourism landscape is increasingly complex, noting shifts in global travel patterns, evolving visitor expectations, heightened community engagement, and ongoing climate and economic challenges that demand resilience.
He emphasized that the Fiji Tourism Convention serves as more than just a ceremonial gathering; it is a strategic forum designed for alignment in policy direction, industry needs, and community aspirations. Mr. Gavoka pointed to the National Sustainable Tourism Framework 2024-2034, which advocates for coordinated efforts, inclusive growth, and long-term sustainability throughout the tourism sector. This forward-thinking approach aims to position Fiji as a leader in sustainable tourism, ensuring the industry continues to thrive while addressing pressing global challenges.
The convention reflects a hopeful and proactive approach to the future of tourism in Fiji, aiming to create an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable visitor economy that benefits all stakeholders involved.
