Fiji’s participation at the 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD58) showcases its strong commitment to improving the health and well-being of its citizens, particularly in enhancing access to quality maternal healthcare for women. Represented by Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua, the nation is actively engaging in discussions in New York from April 7 to April 11.

On the opening day of CPD58, Qereqeretabua conveyed Fiji’s national priorities through her statement and actively participated in a significant side event titled “A Healthier Future for Mothers: Small Island Developing States’ (SIDS) Commitment to Building Resilient Health Systems for Better Outcomes in Maternal Health.” This event was co-hosted by the Australian Permanent Mission to the UN and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Asia Pacific Regional Office, gathering essential stakeholders to share insights and advancements in maternal healthcare within SIDS.

During her address, Qereqeretabua emphasized Fiji’s innovative community-driven approach to strengthening maternal health systems. She acknowledged the significant partnership between the Fijian government, UNFPA, and Australia in promoting the midwifery profession. “UNFPA has played a crucial role in enhancing maternal healthcare in Fiji,” she stated, reiterating the government’s commitment to professionalizing midwifery and increasing access to maternal care, especially for rural and underserved communities.

The discussions at the side event highlighted a collective SIDS goal of achieving zero maternal mortality by 2030, with a focus on high-impact strategies, resilient health systems, and essential partnerships for success. Qereqeretabua expressed gratitude to international partners for their ongoing support, stressing that coordinated actions are vital in protecting the health and well-being of Fijian women and girls.

Fiji’s recent efforts align with earlier commitments expressed during engagements at the 69th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), where the country laid out its dedication to addressing gender inequalities through sustainable health initiatives and policies. As seen in previous events, including the ongoing commitment to women’s empowerment, Fiji continues to take significant steps toward overcoming barriers and ensuring positive outcomes in maternal health and women’s rights.

This collaborative spirit within the Pacific community fosters optimism for future advancements, reflecting a hopeful commitment to improving the lives of women and children.
