Fiji has expressed its support for the proposed Pandemic Agreement during the ongoing 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva. In a statement delivered by Honourable Penioni Ravunawa, the Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Fiji acknowledged the global efforts spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO) to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.

Ravunawa highlighted the agreement’s emphasis on various crucial elements, including prevention strategies, a One Health approach, equitable access to resources, and robust governance mechanisms. He praised the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) for its leadership in shaping the agreement over the past three years.

Since the start of the negotiations in February 2022, Fiji has actively participated, reinforcing the importance of a unified global response to future pandemics. His remarks were made during a time when health ministers and senior officials from across the globe are gathering to discuss international health regulations and finalize the Pandemic Agreement.

This commitment echoes Fiji’s ongoing dialogue within the Pacific region about enhancing health systems, especially in light of the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. The emphasis on equitable health practices and access demonstrates a collective understanding of the importance of supportive partnerships among nations.

With Fiji’s proactive involvement, there’s optimism for constructive outcomes that may strengthen health security not just regionally, but globally. Collaborative efforts represent a hopeful step toward future public health resilience, reflecting the shared vision among nations to prepare for, and effectively manage, potential health crises.
