Fiji is advocating for a robust global response to food insecurity as it participates in the 2025 High-Level Ministerial Special Event in Rome. Represented by Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways Dr. Andrew Tukana, Fiji’s focus at the summit is on enhancing support for small island nations, least developed countries, and landlocked countries grappling with escalating climate threats and a heavy reliance on food imports.

During the event, Dr. Tukana emphasized the necessity of creating more resilient food systems by leveraging local knowledge, innovative technology, and strengthened partnerships. This initiative aligns with the global objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 2, aimed at eradicating hunger.

Fiji’s engagement highlights its commitment to safeguarding its citizens by reducing dependency on external food supplies, a message that resonates with previous discussions focused on enhancing local food production to combat rising diet-related health issues. Experts have pointed out the conflicts between export-focused agricultural policies and the urgent need for local food security as Fiji works to improve nutrition for its population.

Additionally, Fiji has made considerable progress in reducing food import costs, reporting a savings of $17 million by curtailing imports and boosting exports. Such measures underscore a positive trend towards achieving self-sufficiency in food production while fostering economic resilience.

The insistence on collaborative efforts across government, multiple sectors, and community organizations serves as a hopeful framework for addressing these pressing food challenges. By prioritizing local agriculture and sustainable practices, Fiji is positioning itself to create a healthier population and a sustainable future for all its citizens.
