Fiji Celebrates Unity at Chinese Festivals: A Cultural Tapestry Unfolds

The Chinese community plays a crucial role in the multicultural makeup of Fiji, significantly impacting the nation’s development and cultural richness. This was emphasized by His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, the President of Fiji, during his attendance at the China National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival 2024 held in Suva. He noted that the traditions, values, and diligent efforts of the Chinese community have been instrumental in shaping Fiji into the vibrant and inclusive country it is today.

President Katonivere stated that the Moon Festival serves as a reminder of the fundamental values that connect people, such as family (veiwekani), unity, and love for one another (veilomani). He remarked, “As we gather today, we are reminded of the importance of these values in our own lives and in our community. The spirit of the festival symbolizes harmony and completeness, reflecting the unity and strength of our diverse society here in Fiji.”

The celebration aligns with the Coalition Government’s efforts to enhance connections between the people of Fiji and China, marking a significant first for any Pacific Island nation.
