Fiji Celebrates Unity and Diversity at Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival in Fiji highlights the country’s cultural diversity and respect for its Chinese community. Also known as the Moon Festival, this celebration was marked by the Chinese community in Fiji with expressions of gratitude and joy.

During the festivities in Suva, Fiji’s President Wiliame Kotonivere expressed his gratitude towards the Chinese farming community for their contributions to local agriculture. He emphasized the role they play in providing fresh produce and enhancing domestic agricultural exports, saying, “They have been instrumental in farming our everyday food crops, ensuring that our families have a choice of locally grown vegetables.”

The festival, celebrated not only in Fiji but also by Chinese communities around the world, symbolizes the harvest season and encourages family gatherings, gratitude, and the sharing of abundance. Mr. Kotonivere highlighted that the Moon Festival reflects values of family, unity, and love, stating, “We are reminded of the importance of these values in our own lives and in our community. The spirit of the festival symbolizes harmony and completeness, reflecting the unity and strength of our diverse society here in Fiji.”

The Chinese community has played a vital role in Fiji’s multicultural landscape, contributing to the nation’s development and cultural richness. Mr. Kotonivere acknowledged their traditions and hard work, stating, “Your traditions, values, and hard work have helped shape Fiji into the vibrant and inclusive nation it is today.”

He celebrated Fiji’s natural beauty, expressing appreciation for the environment that enhances such festivities. “As we celebrate the Moon Festival, let us also take a moment to appreciate the natural environment that surrounds us and commit to preserving it for future generations,” he urged.

The President also emphasized the importance of unity and mutual respect, noting that these ideals are crucial in contemporary times. Additionally, the Chinese community anticipates the upcoming celebration of China’s National Day, marking the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
