President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu hosted a reception at State House yesterday to honor the returning soldiers of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) 1st Battalion, who have recently completed their service under the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI). This deployment is part of Fiji’s long-standing dedication to United Nations peacekeeping operations, highlighting the nation’s commitment to global peace, stability, and international cooperation.

Fiji’s peacekeepers have gained a reputation for their professionalism, discipline, and resilience, embodying the proud tradition of the RFMF as they undertake demanding missions worldwide. During the reception, President Lalabalavu expressed gratitude on behalf of the Government and people of Fiji, recognizing the soldiers for their dedication, commitment, and sacrifices throughout their tour of duty in Iraq.

The event was marked by the presence of two former Heads of State, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote and Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, along with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Other notable attendees included former Prime Minister and former RFMF Commander Voreqe Bainimarama, Members of Cabinet, representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, civil society leaders, and senior members of the RFMF leadership.

This reception not only celebrates the soldiers’ accomplishments but also serves as a reminder of Fiji’s pivotal role in international peacekeeping efforts.
