The Fiji Water Flying Fijians showcased a powerful second-half performance to secure a convincing 41-17 victory over Japan, earning their sixth Pacific Nations Cup title.

Ponipate Loganimasi made an impressive debut, breaking through the defense to score two tries in just 24 minutes of play. Caleb Muntz, named Player of the Tournament, demonstrated his versatility and decision-making abilities throughout the match, executing flawless kicking and strong game management.

The match began with Seungsin Lee and Muntz exchanging early penalties before Japan’s Dylan Riley ignited the game with a stunning try in the 20th minute. After evading multiple tacklers, Riley managed to chip the ball over a defender, winning the race to score, with Lee converting to give Japan a 7-3 lead.

Fiji appeared to score their first try in the 31st minute when Inia Tabuavou crossed the line, but it was disallowed due to a knock-on. However, less than a minute later, Fiji leveled the score when Tabuavou set up Vuate Karawalevu, who scored following a blocked grubber kick. Muntz converted to make it 7-7 at halftime, with Japan playing a man down after hooker Mamoru Harada received a yellow card.

Japan managed to hold off Fiji during their 10 minutes with 14 players, although Fiji’s Elia Canakaivata had a try disallowed for obstruction. In the second half, Fiji’s substitutes made a significant impact. Muntz added a penalty, followed by a well-coordinated play that allowed Loganimasi to score in the corner. Muntz converted, extending Fiji’s lead to 17-7.

Fiji continued to press, with Tuisue scoring from close range and Karawalevu notching his second try after an incredible offload from Kitione Salawa. Loganimasi capped off a stellar performance with another try, sidestepping Japan’s full-back Lee. Japan’s Malo Tuitama managed a consolation try late in the match, but it wasn’t enough to alter the outcome.

This victory further cements Fiji’s dominance in the Pacific Nations Cup history.
