The Mid-Autumn Festival in Fiji showcases the nation’s diversity and respect for Chinese culture. Celebrated by the Chinese community, the festival, also known as the Moon Festival, emphasizes gratitude and the sharing of joy and prosperity.
During the festivities in Suva, Fijian President Wiliame Kotonivere expressed his gratitude towards the Chinese farming community for their vital role in enhancing food security and agricultural exports. “They have been instrumental in farming our everyday food crops, ensuring that our families have a choice of locally grown vegetables,” he remarked.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, eagerly anticipated by Chinese communities both locally and abroad, marks the harvest season and serves as a time for family gatherings and giving thanks. Mr. Kotonivere highlighted that the festival mirrors the values of family, unity, and love within the community.
He noted, “The spirit of the festival symbolizes harmony and completeness, reflecting the unity and strength of our diverse society here in Fiji.” The Chinese community has played a crucial role in Fiji’s multicultural landscape, significantly contributing to the nation’s development and cultural richness.
Mr. Kotonivere acknowledged the importance of Fiji’s natural environment, stating, “Our islands are a testament to the wonders of nature, offering a serene and striking backdrop for celebrations such as this.” He encouraged the community to appreciate and preserve the environment for future generations.
Emphasizing the importance of unity and mutual respect, he called for everyone to support one another and celebrate the diversity that strengthens Fiji. The Chinese community is also looking forward to commemorating China’s National Day, marking the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
