The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage, and Arts in Fiji is in the process of developing a National Policy aimed at recognizing and supporting the Melanesian community. This initiative was highlighted during a groundbreaking seminar held to mark the 160th anniversary of Melanesian laborers arriving in the country.
During the seminar, Hon. Ifereimi Vasu, the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, emphasized the importance of creating an interactive program through the Melanesian Council. This program is intended to foster community engagement, enabling members to reconnect and discuss their aspirations for the future.
Minister Vasu pointed out that this gathering marks a significant milestone, signifying a long-overdue acknowledgment of the contributions and sacrifices made by Melanesian descendants in Fiji. The seminar took place at the Great Council of Chiefs Talanoa Lounge in Draiba, Nasese, with the objective of enhancing cultural inclusion and strengthening national identity.
The commemorative events will conclude tomorrow at Suva Foreshore, during which Fiji’s Prime Minister is expected to officiate.
This initiative not only honors the past but also reinforces a positive trajectory towards inclusivity and community empowerment in Fiji. By recognizing the contributions of the Melanesian community, Fiji is taking important steps towards nurturing a more unified national identity.
