The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage & Arts is taking significant steps toward recognizing and supporting Fiji’s Melanesian community through the development of a National Policy. This initiative comes as Hon. Ifereimi Vasu, the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, launched the first-ever seminar marking the 160th anniversary of Melanesian laborers’ arrival in Fiji.

During the seminar, Minister Vasu encouraged the Melanesian Council to foster an interactive and impactful program that will enable community members to reconnect and discuss their aspirations for the future. He emphasized that this event represents a pivotal moment for acknowledging the contributions and sacrifices made by Melanesian descendants over the years.

The seminar is being held at the Great Council of Chiefs Talanoa Lounge in Draiba, Nasese, and aims to enhance cultural inclusion and strengthen national identity among Fiji’s diverse communities. The commemoration event is set to conclude with a ceremony at the Suva Foreshore, where the Prime Minister of Fiji will preside over the final activities.

This initiative not only brings to light the historical significance of the Melanesian community in Fiji but also fosters a sense of unity and collective identity as the country looks toward the future.

Overall, these efforts reflect a hopeful trend towards inclusivity and cultural acknowledgment, promising a brighter and more united future for all Fijians.
