The Fiji National University (FNU) commenced its three-day graduation ceremony on Tuesday at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, recognizing the accomplishments of 1,694 graduates, a noteworthy achievement especially for the College of Humanities, Education and Law.

With the conclusion of the second session recently and the final one set for today, FNU has underscored the importance of this event in contributing not only to individual graduates but also to the broader development of Fiji.

A particularly significant highlight of this year’s ceremony is the remarkable increase in female graduates, with 918 women among those receiving their qualifications. This reflects FNU’s ongoing commitment to gender equity and the empowerment of women within the educational sector. FNU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, celebrated this achievement during her address, emphasizing the tenacity and resilience displayed by female students who often tackle societal challenges to achieve success.

Professor Nabobo-Baba stated, “Today marks a total of 579 graduates. Over the next three days, we will be celebrating a total of 1,694 graduates across three ceremonies. I am proud to share that 918 of these graduates are women, highlighting our commitment to gender parity at the national level.”

Paula Manumanunitoga, General Secretary for the Fiji Teachers Union, also addressed the graduates, encouraging them to enter the workforce with integrity and responsibility. She motivated the audience by acknowledging that while challenges may arise, determination and a positive mindset can lead to transformative opportunities. “You are the future of Fiji, an embodiment of hope and promise,” she emphasized, urging graduates to recognize the potential they hold to uplift communities and benefit the economy.

Among the graduates, personal stories of resilience were shared, with many balancing studies with family and work commitments. One graduate expressed her joy and pride in her journey, stating, “I’m feeling very happy especially it’s been a very hard journey. I’m really proud of how far I’ve come.”

The celebration serves as a reminder that education is a powerful transforming force, inspiring hope and encouraging others to pursue their academic aspirations. This event not only marks a pivotal moment for the graduates but also symbolizes the potential for progress within Fijian society as these new alumni step into their respective fields and contribute positively to their communities.

The continuation of these graduation celebrations highlights the importance of education in shaping future leaders and innovators for the nation and reinforces the uplifting sentiment that education can ignite positive change in society.
