Fiji Celebrates Diversity at the Mid-Autumn Festival: A Night of Unity and Thanks

The Mid-Autumn Festival celebration in Fiji highlights the nation’s diversity and its respect for Chinese culture. Known as the Moon Festival, the Chinese community celebrated the occasion with gratitude and expressions of joy and prosperity.

During the festivities held in Suva, Fiji’s President Wiliame Kotonivere expressed his appreciation for the Chinese farming community. He emphasized their crucial role in providing local food crops that ensure families have access to a variety of locally grown vegetables. Kotonivere acknowledged their significant contributions to the development of Fiji’s agricultural exports as well.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, eagerly anticipated by the Chinese community in Fiji and around the world, marks the harvest season and is a time for family reunions, thanksgiving, and the sharing of joy and prosperity. Kotonivere noted that the festival embodies values of unity and love among families.

He stated, “The spirit of the festival symbolizes harmony and completeness, reflecting the unity and strength of our diverse society here in Fiji.” The Chinese community is an essential part of Fiji’s multicultural makeup, significantly contributing to the nation’s development and enriching its cultural heritage. Kotonivere remarked that the traditions and hard work of the Chinese community have helped shape Fiji into a vibrant and inclusive nation.

Highlighting the country’s natural beauty, he mentioned Fiji’s pristine beaches, clear waters, lush rainforests, and majestic mountains, which provide a stunning backdrop for celebrations like the Moon Festival. He encouraged participants to appreciate the surrounding natural environment and to commit to its preservation for future generations.

Looking ahead, the Chinese community in Fiji is also preparing to celebrate China’s National Day, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
