Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, conveyed a powerful message at the Team Fiji thanksgiving ceremony held at Hall A of the Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay, Suva, emphasizing that performance is measured not only by medal count but also by personal achievements, humility, and resilience, especially during challenging moments. This event celebrated the accomplishments of Team Fiji’s athletes and officials from the recent Pacific Mini Games held in Koror, Palau, from June 29 to July 9.
Saukuru recognized the unwavering support from the nation as athletes competed, reinforcing the sense of unity and pride felt throughout Fiji during the games. He expressed gratitude to the athletes for their inspiring performances, reminding them that participation is vital and goes beyond just winning. “I am proud of your government’s support for our athletes and our commitment to preparing you for regional and international events,” he stated.
Echoing sentiments from the past, the Minister quoted Nelson Mandela, highlighting the power of sports to unite and inspire people. Team Fiji excelled at the Mini Games, finishing with a remarkable tally of 27 gold, 30 silver, and 24 bronze medals. This performance marks a significant improvement from their previous showing at the 2022 Saipan Games, where they collected fewer medals, showcasing the team’s growth and tenacity.
Among the standout performances, Heleina Young, a former Fijiana 7s player, emerged as the overall outstanding female athlete, securing three gold medals and two silvers. Her achievements, alongside those of fellow athletes, demonstrate the dedication and hard work that have characterized Team Fiji, fostering a renewed sense of national pride and optimism for the future of sports in the country.
The celebration of Team Fiji’s achievements is not only a reflection of individual athletic talent but also an inspiring reminder of the community’s support. As Team Fiji looks to future competitions, the collective accomplishments build hope and expectations for continued excellence, reinforcing the resilient spirit that defines Fijian athletes.
