Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu emphasized the transformative impact of digital technologies on daily life during his address at the World Safer Internet Day event in Nadi. He highlighted the government’s clear vision for Fiji’s digital future, acknowledging both the advantages and disadvantages that come with advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI).

Mr. Tudravu noted, “Just as the internet enhances connectivity, it can also enhance division,” pointing out the misuse of AI on social media platforms that contributes to negative interactions online. He underscored the theme of this year’s event, “Smart Tech, Safe Choices — Exploring the Safe and Responsible Use of AI,” urging the community to recognize the importance of digital awareness. He stressed that this awareness needs to extend beyond a single day, advocating for ongoing education and engagement about responsible technology use.

The commissioner recognized that AI is irreversible in today’s society and called for collective efforts to raise community awareness, enabling individuals to make informed and safe choices. “I am optimistic that we will achieve this if we work together,” he said, advocating for continued discussions beyond the event.

Highlighting the darker side of social media, he expressed concern over recent toxic behaviors online, with many individuals adopting hateful and dissenting personas while hiding behind anonymity. Mr. Tudravu stated that as AI technology proliferates, it becomes increasingly challenging to address online abuse effectively.

He revealed concerning statistics about cybercrimes, noting a significant rise in computer-related offenses such as intimate image abuse and unauthorized account access. “Nearly 60 percent of cybercrimes involve intimate image abuse,” he added, reflecting the urgent need for enhanced protective measures and legal frameworks.

During the event, Mr. Tudravu also declared that 2026 will be a pivotal year for “uniformity” across policing efforts, advocating for collaboration among various stakeholders in addressing digital safety challenges. He emphasized that tackling these issues requires a comprehensive approach, stating, “Police cannot address these issues alone.” He urged the sharing of best practices and information to foster a solid digital resilience among Fijians.

The commissioner reinforced the significance of Fiji’s National Digital Strategy 2025-2030 as a strategic milestone towards a more inclusive and secure digital landscape. He expressed faith in the government’s commitment to leveraging digital advancements for the benefit of all citizens, while voicing the need for law enforcement to adopt proactive measures to enhance cybersecurity.

As the digital landscape evolves, Mr. Tudravu’s message resonates: strong collaboration and community engagement are essential for ensuring online safety and security, allowing users to navigate the cyber world confidently.
