The Government of Fiji has issued a renewed appeal for restraint, dialogue, and the peaceful resolution of disputes amidst rising tensions in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Foreign Affairs and External Trade Minister Sakiasi Ditoka emphasized the importance of adhering to international law while closely monitoring the evolving situation in the region.
In a recent statement, Minister Ditoka noted that Fiji has been in contact with its diplomatic missions and honorary consuls and is actively engaging with local authorities to stay informed about developments. He reiterated Fiji’s commitment to encouraging peaceful discourse and conflict resolution.
“Our missions and honorary consuls are maintaining communication channels with Fijian nationals in the region,” Ditoka stated, adding that, so far, there have been no confirmed reports of Fijian citizens being adversely affected by the escalating situation.
Recognizing that many Fijians reside and work across various Gulf countries, including Qatar, the Ministry is taking proactive measures to ensure preparedness in case conditions worsen. “As a precaution, the Ministry is reviewing contingency protocols and is ready to provide consular support if required,” he explained.
Minister Ditoka urged Fijians currently in the Middle East to remain calm and vigilant, follow host governments’ advisories, and keep in touch with their families back home. He also reassured families in Fiji of the Ministry’s commitment to actively monitoring the situation and providing updates as needed.
By fostering dialogue and maintaining a focus on diplomacy, Fiji aims to contribute positively to peaceful solutions that can help ease tensions in the region.
