Fiji’s participation in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2025 and the 15th International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) General Assembly earlier this week centered on a pressing call for increased access to renewable energy financing. Represented by Minister for Public Works and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, Fiji’s delegation highlighted the need for greater funding, particularly in solar energy projects and solar water pumping systems targeted at rural communities, including schools and health centers.
Minister Tuisawau emphasized the significant challenges faced by Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS), like Fiji, in the context of climate change—citing threats such as rising sea levels and an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events, including cyclones and floods. He articulated the necessity for strengthened international support to amplify the voices of SIDS in discussions surrounding global energy policies.
Highlighting Fiji’s commitment to the international energy transition agenda, Tuisawau held a crucial bilateral meeting with Francisco La Camera, the Director General of IRENA. The two leaders agreed to enhance collaboration through several of IRENA’s financing platforms, including the Energy Transition Accelerator Financing (ETAF), Climate Investment Platform (CIP), and the Small Island Developing States Lighthouses Initiative, designed to support sustainable energy initiatives in Fiji’s remote communities.
Fiji’s role in the ADSW and IRENA forums reflects its ongoing efforts to transition to renewable energy, previously noted at COP29 in Azerbaijan, where Tuisawau shared Fiji’s ambitious goal of generating over 90% of its electricity from renewables by 2030, along with a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Currently, approximately 55% of Fiji’s electricity is generated from renewable sources, primarily hydropower.
This active engagement in global initiatives not only seeks to secure the resources necessary for Fiji’s own energy transition but also sets an inspirational precedent for other nations facing similar challenges. By continuing to advocate for collaborative solutions and emphasizing sustainability, Fiji demonstrates the importance and potential of turning challenges into opportunities within the realm of climate action.
In summary, Fiji is paving the way for a transition to renewable energy, strengthening its voice in international climate discussions and seeking vital support to achieve its environmental goals. This proactive attitude fosters a narrative of hope and determination amid the global climate crisis, encouraging other nations to pursue sustainable energy solutions.
