During the 6th High Level Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Finance at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, emphasized the need for comprehensive and transformative climate financing, rather than relying on small-scale initiatives and disconnected projects. He called on the international community to adopt a more integrated approach to tackling the challenges posed by climate change.
Prasad highlighted that for Fiji and other Small Island Developing States, it is crucial to move away from fragmented efforts. He expressed hope for the outcome of the discussions, urging participants to agree on an ambitious New Collective Quantifying Goal (NCQG) that would drive the global economy toward decarbonization and significant adaptation strategies.
He underscored that achieving the 1.5°C temperature target outlined in the Paris Agreement is contingent upon making smart investments and enabling effective policies. Without these decisive measures, the ambitions of the agreement could become unattainable from both economic and scientific perspectives.
This call for unified action serves as a stark reminder of the urgency required in global climate action. It reflects the growing recognition that sustainable change requires substantial and coordinated efforts, particularly for vulnerable nations like Fiji.
