During the 6th High Level Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Finance at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Biman Prasad emphasized the need for a fundamental shift in how the international community approaches climate change. He argued that addressing the significant challenges posed by climate change cannot be achieved through small initiatives or fragmented projects, especially for Fiji and other Small Island Developing States.

Prasad called for transformative financing that prioritizes large-scale projects capable of driving significant change rather than limited pilot programs. He expressed hope that the conference would lead to ambitious commitments concerning the New Collective Quantifying Goal (NCQG) that would promote decarbonization and support transformational adaptation globally.

According to Prasad, realizing the Paris Agreement’s target of keeping global temperature rises to 1.5°C is not possible without appropriate investments and support mechanisms that enable robust action against climate change.

This call to action underscores a growing recognition that comprehensive approaches to climate finance are necessary for vulnerable nations. By rallying international support for extensive projects, there is optimism that meaningful progress can be made in combating climate change and enhancing resilience.

Additionally, it is encouraging to see dialogue focusing on large-scale solutions that can create a more sustainable future. Collaboration among countries could potentially lead to breakthroughs that benefit nations across the globe, particularly those most affected by climate impacts.
