The Cabinet has approved an Exchange of Notes with the Government of Japan and a Grant Funding Agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for a $15 million grant to Airports Fiji Pte Ltd.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Cabinet revealed that under the Grant Funding Agreement, JICA would be responsible for procuring and installing aircraft surveillance systems at Nadi International Airport and Labasa Airport.

Additionally, JICA will offer consultancy services to enhance aviation safety.

The funding will also be used to acquire five fire trucks for the airports in Nausori, Labasa, Savusavu, and Matei, as well as three rescue boats for Nadi International Airport.

Public service broadcast

The Cabinet has agreed to open up Public Service Broadcasting to other media organizations starting from the next financial year.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced this decision, which was agreed upon by the Cabinet in its 11th and 12th meetings held on July 2 and 15, 2024.

Mr. Rabuka stated that historically, the Government had exclusively engaged the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation to provide public service broadcasting via radio and TV.

This new decision aims to ensure fairness and create a level playing field within the media industry.

He mentioned that the People’s Coalition Government intends to engage other service providers to ensure broader reach on public interest issues and promote fair competition in the media sector.
