The Fijian government has expressed that there is currently no plan for succession in the Prime Minister’s office, as the Cabinet believes there is no immediate need to contemplate leadership changes while an appeal process is ongoing. Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya addressed this topic during a press conference on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of respecting the judicial process. She noted that the legal appeals will take time to navigate, referencing the need for it to progress through both the Court of Appeal and potentially to the Supreme Court.

Tabuya confirmed that the Cabinet has unanimously dismissed any calls for the Prime Minister to resign. “There’s no urgency to it, because the appeal process will take some time,” she stated, reinforcing that the governing party and the Prime Minister would not engage with the issue until it is resolved through legal channels. She highlighted the fundamental right to pursue legal options available to any citizen, underlining the proper functioning of Fiji’s judicial system.

Furthermore, the People’s Alliance Party (PAP) has reaffirmed its strong support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, particularly after his recent comments regarding resignation as a possible option. PAP General Secretary Sila Balawa explained that Rabuka’s remarks had been misinterpreted, asserting that both the Cabinet and the party firmly back his leadership. Balawa clarified that the Prime Minister had followed legal advice regarding the issues raised in the recent High Court ruling. He added that the situation was now in the hands of the Judicial Services Commission and reiterated the party’s commitment to stand behind Rabuka as they approach an election year.

In response to public criticism, including concerns about the Prime Minister’s age and alleged poor advice, Balawa stated that such discourse is common during election periods, although he emphasized that it must be factually grounded. Despite the criticisms, Balawa expressed confidence in Rabuka’s leadership and the party’s united front as they prepare for the upcoming elections.

This commitment to maintaining stability and a unified leadership reflects a hopeful sentiment during a period of political scrutiny, emphasizing the belief in the Prime Minister’s ability to lead effectively. The Cabinet’s and PAP’s solid support for Rabuka exemplifies confidence in continuity during a crucial time for Fijian politics.
