The Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF) is calling on businesses across Fiji to take part in forthcoming public consultations regarding a proposed increase in electricity tariffs. These consultations, organized by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), will take place from January 6 to January 15, 2026, in all divisions throughout the country.

Edward Bernard, the CEO of FCEF, highlighted the concerns raised by many businesses regarding the proposed tariff hikes. “We have received numerous concerns from businesses about the impact of this substantial increase. FCEF will continue to advocate for a reduced rate of increase,” he stated.

The temporary suspension of the tariff increase has been welcomed as a positive development, according to Bernard, who emphasized the importance of businesses voicing their opinions during the public consultations and through written submissions.

He cautioned that the projected 34.7% average hike for commercial users could drastically impact operational environments. “This increase will elevate the costs of doing business in Fiji, likely influencing expansion plans, investment decisions, and overall competitiveness,” he noted.

Bernard further pointed out that the ramifications of the tariff increase could reach various sectors, firm sizes, ownership types, and regions, potentially undermining national economic objectives, such as enhancing the contribution of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to 22% of GDP and boosting overall investment to 20% by the year 2030.

In response to the proposed changes, the FCEF is preparing a comprehensive submission and aims to arrange a dedicated meeting with the FCCC to present the private sector’s viewpoint. The FCEF encourages widespread participation from the business community to ensure their voices and concerns are duly recognized.
