Fiji Bus Crash Spurs Urgent Road Safety Push

Twenty-nine individuals are receiving medical care at Sigatoka Hospital following a serious road accident this afternoon at Semo Hill along the Queens Road. The Fiji Police Force confirmed that the incident took place around 1:45 PM when a truck traveling towards Nadi lost control, colliding with a vehicle ahead of it before swerving into oncoming traffic and crashing head-on into a bus.

According to police reports, twenty-eight passengers from the bus, along with the truck driver, sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Images and videos of the crash have been widely shared on social media platforms, raising concerns about road safety.

In light of this incident, police have urged drivers to exercise heightened caution, particularly when navigating hilly and wet areas of the Queens Road. This accident underscores the pressing issue of road safety in Fiji, especially in the wake of previous accidents involving public transport vehicles. Recently, multiple bus-related incidents have prompted officials, including Irimaia Rokosawa, CEO of the Land Transport Authority, to advocate for stricter adherence to safety regulations among drivers.

As investigations into this latest accident continue, there is hope that increased awareness and enforcement of road safety measures may contribute to safer travel experiences for passengers throughout the region. Community members and authorities alike remain optimistic that a collective commitment to safe driving practices can significantly reduce the likelihood of similar accidents in the future, fostering a safer environment for all road users.
