Three passengers from a Pacific Transport bus that veered off the road in Cuvu, Sigatoka, on Friday afternoon are currently recuperating at Lautoka Hospital after sustaining serious injuries. Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu reported that there were 32 passengers on board the bus, which was on its route from Nadi to Sigatoka at the time of the incident.

While 29 passengers received treatment for minor injuries and have since been released, three individuals required more extensive medical attention and have been admitted for ongoing care. The bus driver has also been released but is awaiting an interview with authorities as investigations unfold to determine the exact cause of the accident.

This incident underscores the critical issue of road safety in Fiji, a concern that has gained notable traction following several recent bus-related accidents. For example, a severe collision involving a minibus and a container truck has drawn attention to the necessity of strict adherence to safety guidelines among Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers. Irimaia Rokosawa, CEO of the Land Transport Authority, stressed the importance of road safety, calling for enhanced compliance among drivers to mitigate the risk of further incidents.

As investigations proceed, there is hope that these tragic events will ignite increased awareness and enforcement of road safety regulations, paving the way for safer travel experiences for passengers throughout Fiji. Community members and officials remain optimistic that a collaborative commitment to improved driving practices can significantly reduce the chances of future accidents, fostering a safer environment for everyone on the road.
