Fiji Bulikula’s Star-Studded Squad Emerges for Pacific Bowl Championship

Prominent Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is one of eight NRLW players selected to represent Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. This announcement was made by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.

Rabele stated, “We traveled to Australia to scout talent and have chosen eight players, including the notable halfback Losana Lutu.”

Lutu, who hails from Suva and is a product of the Campbelltown Junior Program, has quickly advanced through the ranks at Wests Tigers. A talented five-eighth known for her dynamic running style, she made a significant impact in 2022, playing a pivotal role in New South Wales’ Under-19s State of Origin win and securing her first title with Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the conclusion of the 2026 season.

Looking ahead, Rabele emphasized the importance of finding the best player combinations for their upcoming match against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup.

“We have been monitoring women’s games in the local competition,” Rabele, who previously led the Bati to the 2008 RLWC semi-finals, mentioned. “Currently, I have several players in mind for a squad of 35, but we will need to seek NRL approval for their eligibility.”

Rabele acknowledged the need for improvements, particularly regarding the quality of the local competition. He stressed the significance of the upcoming qualifier, stating, “This game is crucial for us.”

Aware of the challenge ahead to secure a spot in the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, Rabele is carefully strategizing for the qualifiers. “We have a strong team, and I am just waiting for clearance from the NRL. I have also included several high school girls from the Lami Steelers for this qualifier,” he added.

He highlighted that approximately 50% of the final 35-member squad will be made up of locally based players. Rabele reflected on last year’s setback, as Fiji Bulikula was not part of the World Cup, but he is optimistic about moving forward.

“This year provides us with an opportunity to better identify our players. The team we will finalize promises to be strong and diverse,” he concluded.
