Prominent Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is one of eight players selected to represent Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship for the NRLW (National Rugby League Women). This announcement was made over the weekend by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele.

Rabele explained that the coaching staff traveled to Australia to scout talent, resulting in the selection of eight players, including the notable Lutu.

The Suva-born athlete emerged as a promising junior player in Campbelltown and has made significant strides in her career with the Wests Tigers. Lutu had a standout 2022 season, contributing to New South Wales’ success in the Under-19s State of Origin and helping her club secure a maiden title in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the Tigers until the end of the 2026 season.

Looking ahead, Rabele emphasized the importance of selecting the right mix of players for the match against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup Women.

He noted, “We’ve been monitoring the women’s local competitions,” referencing his previous experience leading the Bati to the semi-finals of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. Rabele plans to submit a squad of 35 players to the NRL for eligibility approval.

While there is optimism surrounding the team, Rabele acknowledged the need for improvements, particularly in local competition levels. He conveyed the significance of the upcoming qualifiers, stating that they are essential for the team’s goal of reaching the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup.

Rabele mentioned that approximately 50 percent of the squad will consist of locally-based players. He also reflected on the previous year, expressing disappointment that Fiji Bulikula did not participate in the World Cup, but he sees this year as an opportunity to identify and develop players.

“This year is beneficial as it allows us time for player identification. The team we will announce will be a strong mix of talent,” he concluded.
