Fiji Bulikula’s Bold Move: Wests Tigers Star Joins NRLW Stars for World Cup Qualifiers

Losana Lutu, a standout five-eighth from Wests Tigers, is among eight players representing Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship as part of the NRLW (National Rugby League Women). This announcement was made by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.

Rabele stated, “We went to Australia to scout players and have selected eight players.” Lutu, who is a Suva native and a product of Campbelltown Junior, has quickly progressed through the Wests Tigers development system in recent years.

Lutu showcased her talent during the 2022 season, contributing to New South Wales’ success in the Under-19s State of Origin and helping Wests Tigers secure a title in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is currently signed with the club until the end of the 2026 season.

As the team prepares for their match against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup Women, Rabele emphasized the importance of forming the best team combination.

“We’ve been observing women’s games in the local competition,” Rabele said. He noted he has several players in mind for the 35-member squad but will need NRL approval for their eligibility.

Rabele acknowledged the need to improve the standard of the local competition and stressed the significance of the upcoming qualifier. He expressed confidence in his team’s capabilities while awaiting clearance from NRL. Additionally, he mentioned that half of the squad will consist of locally-based players, including a number of secondary school athletes from Lami Steelers.

Reflecting on last year’s absence from the World Cup, Rabele expressed optimism about this year’s opportunity to identify talent, stating, “This team will be a good mix of players.”
