The Fiji Bulikula women’s rugby league team is gearing up for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup Qualifiers later this year, with both the Eastern and Western Bulikula sides set to be selected. Head Coach Josaia Rabele will announce a number of players for the Bulikula Residence team, which will undergo trial sessions with players based overseas before the final squad is formed.
In recent Talent Identification programs conducted in Nadi and Suva, coach Rabele expressed his optimism about the team’s preparations, acknowledging the urgency as the qualifiers approach in October. “While time is not on our side, our training programs are progressing well,” he stated, ensuring that the team is gearing up to make a strong showing.
The Women’s Rugby League Qualifiers will take place in Canada, where the Bulikula will be competing against teams such as Ireland and Nigeria, furthering their ambitions. Rabele has emphasized that the main goal is to win the World Series and earn a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
This year represents an important opportunity for the Bulikula after showing considerable improvement in the International Rugby League rankings, having progressed from 26th to 16th. Under Rabele’s guidance, they have surpassed notable countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and the Philippines, reflecting the growth of women’s rugby league in Fiji.
As local players prepare to resume training, there is a sense of hope and determination. The Bulikula’s journey not only showcases their commitment to competing at the highest levels but also serves as an inspiring example of how women’s rugby can empower and unite communities in Fiji, fueling aspirations for future success.
