Rising Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is one of eight National Rugby League Women (NRLW) players set to represent Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. This announcement was made over the weekend by head coach Joe Rabele.
Rabele confirmed their player recruitment efforts in Australia, stating, “We went to Australia to scout players and we’ve selected eight.” Among these is the talented Lutu, who has made a name for herself playing in Australia.
Hailing from Suva, Lutu is a Campbelltown junior who has swiftly climbed through the ranks of the Wests Tigers pathways. Known for her exceptional skills as a five-eighth and a strong running ability, she had a standout 2022 season. Her achievements include contributing to New South Wales’ success in the Under-19s State of Origin and securing her first title with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. Lutu is contracted with the club until the conclusion of the 2026 season.
With a crucial match against Cook Islands Moana scheduled for October 26 in Suva, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League Women’s World Cup, Rabele emphasized the importance of fielding the best combination of players.
Rabele, who previously led the Fiji Bati to the semi-finals of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup, noted their ongoing evaluation of local talent. “We’ve been watching the women’s games in the local competition,” he stated. While he has a preliminary squad of 35 players, all player eligibility will need to be confirmed by the National Rugby League.
He pointed out that the local competition has room for growth, mentioning, “The qualifier is a very important game for us.” Rabele highlighted the urgency of preparing effectively for this qualifier as the pathway to the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup.
“I have a good side, and we are just waiting for clearance from the NRL. I’ve included several secondary school players from the Lami Steelers in the squad for this qualifier,” he shared, with plans for approximately half of the 35-member squad to be composed of local athletes.
Reflecting on last year’s absence from the World Cup, Rabele expressed optimism for this year, noting, “This gives us time to identify our players. The team we will announce is promising due to its blend of talent.”
