Fiji Bulikula Unveils Dynamic Squad for Pacific Bowl Championship

Prominent Wests Tigers five-eighth, Losana Lutu, is one of eight players selected to represent Fiji Bulikula in the Pacific Bowl Championship for NRLW (National Rugby League Women). This announcement was made by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.

“We traveled to Australia to scout talent and have selected eight players,” Rabele stated. “Included in our squad is the outstanding halfback Losana Lutu, who plays for the Wests Tigers.”

Originally from Suva, Lutu has progressed rapidly through the ranks of the Wests Tigers after starting her career as a Campbelltown Junior. She is a talented five-eighth known for her powerful running game. Lutu had a remarkable breakout season in 2022, contributing to New South Wales’ victory in the Under-19s State of Origin and clinching her first title with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the end of the 2026 season.

Rabele emphasized the importance of forming the best possible team ahead of their match against the Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which will serve as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup for Women.

“We have been observing the women’s games in the local competition,” said Rabele, who led the Bati to the semi-finals in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. “Currently, I have several girls who will be included in the 35-player squad, but we will need to secure approval from NRL regarding player eligibility.”

He noted that there is significant potential for improvement in the local competition. “The qualifier is a crucial match for us,” Rabele acknowledged, expressing the ambition to secure a spot in the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup.

“We have a strong squad, and we are awaiting clearance from the NRL. I’ve also included a number of high school players from Lami Steelers to strengthen our chances in this qualifier,” he mentioned.

Rabele revealed that about half of the 35-member squad is expected to be made up of local players. He also reflected on the previous year, noting the disappointment of not having the Fiji Bulikula participate in the World Cup.

“This year presents a valuable opportunity for us to identify our players. The team we will select will be a well-rounded mix of talent,” he added.
