Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu has been selected as one of eight NRLW players to represent Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. This announcement was made by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.
Rabele stated, “We went to Australia to scout players and selected eight for our squad, including the talented halfback Losana Lutu.” Born in Suva, Lutu is a product of the Campbelltown Junior league and has made significant strides in her rugby career while playing with Wests Tigers.
Lutu, known for her exceptional running game, had an impressive 2022 season, contributing to New South Wales’ triumph in the Under-19s State of Origin and securing a championship with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the Tigers until the end of the 2026 season.
With a crucial match against Cook Islands Moana scheduled for October 26 in Suva, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup Women, Rabele emphasized the importance of selecting the right mix of players for the competition.
“We’ve been closely monitoring the women’s local games,” said Rabele, who previously coached the Fijian national team to the semi-finals of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. He indicated that while he has a number of players in mind, they must first obtain approval from the NRL regarding player eligibility.
Rabele pointed out that improving the local competition remains a priority. He sees the upcoming qualifier as a critical opportunity for the team. “It’s essential for us to reach the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, and we must navigate the qualifiers wisely,” he added.
He plans to include several secondary school players from Lami Steelers in the 35-player squad and mentioned that half of these players would be locally based.
Reflecting on last year’s absence from the World Cup, Rabele noted, “This year is beneficial, giving us time to identify our talents. The upcoming team will be well-rounded with a mix of players.”
