Fiji Bulikula has set its sights on qualifying for the 2025 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, with an ambitious goal to secure a top eight ranking. Head coach Josaia Rabele is guiding the national women’s rugby league team as they strive to build on their recent achievements.
Last year, the Bulikula made an impressive leap in the International Rugby League (IRL) rankings, moving from 26th to 16th. Rabele expressed pride in seeing Fijian women ranked above nations like Nigeria, Kenya, and the Philippines, showcasing the growth and potential of women’s rugby in Fiji.
The team is gearing up for a crucial World Series in October, where they will compete against Ireland, Canada, and Nigeria in Canada. “Our major assignment this year is to win the World Series to qualify for the World Cup,” Rabele emphasized, underlining the importance of this event.
Players are currently on a break but will return to training on January 10 for their preseason preparations. Rabele revealed that the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) has expressed interest in hosting the World Series, although the event was ultimately awarded to Canada. This could be a challenging endeavor since hosting the Pacific Championship last October incurred significant costs.
In a previous World Cup qualifying match on November 2, 2024, the Bulikula faced a narrow defeat against Samoa, losing 16-12 at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand. Looking ahead, the upcoming women’s Rugby League World Cup will take place alongside men’s and wheelchair tournaments in Australia and Papua New Guinea, presenting an exciting opportunity for the sport.
Australia continues to hold the title of the strongest rugby league nation, having secured World Cup victories in 2013, 2017, and 2021. As Fiji Bulikula embarks on this journey, their determination and growth in the sport suggest a promising future.
This push toward improving rankings and performance not only highlights the team’s commitment but also serves as an inspiration for women’s sports in Fiji, demonstrating that with dedication and hard work, significant achievements are within reach.
