Fiji’s women’s rugby league team, known as Bulikula, is aiming to qualify for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup in 2025. Head coach Josaia Rabele has set an ambitious target for the team, which includes securing a place in the top eight rankings globally.

Last year, Bulikula made impressive progress by moving up from the 26th to the 16th position in the International Rugby League rankings, surpassing nations such as Nigeria, Kenya, and the Philippines. Rabele expressed pride in this achievement and emphasized that the team’s primary focus this year is to win the World Series, which will serve as the qualifying tournament for the World Cup. This event is scheduled to take place in Canada, where Bulikula will compete against teams from Ireland, Canada, and Nigeria.

Preparations for the tournament are crucial, and local players are currently on break, with training set to resume on January 10 for the pre-season program. There was also mention of Fiji National Rugby League’s ambition to host the World Series, although the costs could be significant following their recent hosting of the Pacific Championship in October.

In a previous qualifier, Bulikula faced a narrow defeat against Samoa, losing 12-16 in a crucial match held in Auckland on November 2, 2024. Looking ahead, the Women’s Rugby League World Cup will take place alongside men’s and wheelchair tournaments in Australia, with some matches hosted in Papua New Guinea. Australia has established itself as a powerhouse in the sport, having secured World Cup victories in 2013, 2017, and 2021.
