Fiji’s national women’s rugby league team, Bulikula, has set its sights on qualifying for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup in 2025. Under the guidance of head coach Josaia Rabele, the team aims not only to secure a spot in the tournament but also to achieve a ranking among the top eight teams globally.
The Bulikula experienced a remarkable rise in the International Rugby League (IRL) rankings last year, jumping from 26th to 16th place. This significant progress is encouraging for the team, as Rabele expressed pride in seeing Fijian women ranked above countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, and the Philippines.
Looking ahead, the Bulikula is scheduled to compete against teams from Ireland, Canada, and Nigeria in the World Series in October, which will serve as the qualifying event for the World Cup set to take place in Canada. Rabele emphasized the team’s goal of winning the World Series to ensure their qualification. Details about the competition format are yet to be announced, but training for local players is set to resume on January 10 as they prepare for their pre-season program.
Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) had previously shown interest in hosting the World Series, but it appears that Canada has been awarded that opportunity. FNRL Chairman Akuila Masi noted that costs were a concern, especially following Fiji’s hosting of the Pacific Championship in October.
In a recent match, the Bulikula fell short against Samoa, losing 12-16 in a World Cup qualifying game held at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland on November 2, 2024. The upcoming Women’s Rugby League World Cup will be held alongside the men’s and wheelchair tournaments in Australia, with Papua New Guinea also slated to host some matches. For years, Australia has demonstrated its dominance in the sport, having won the World Cup in 2013, 2017, and 2021.
This commitment from the Bulikula team and their coaching staff showcases their determination and ambition. With continued focus and training, there is hope that they will achieve their goals and make their mark on the international stage in the coming years.
