Fiji’s women’s rugby league team, the Bulikula, set a lofty goal of qualifying for the 2025 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. Under the guidance of head coach Josaia Rabele, the team aims to break into the top eight rankings as well.

The Bulikula made significant progress last year, climbing from 26th to 16th in the International Rugby League (IRL) rankings. This upward movement highlights the team’s potential, and Rabele expressed pride in seeing them outperform countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and the Philippines.

In October, the Bulikula will compete in the World Series in Canada, facing off against Ireland, Canada, and Nigeria in hopes of securing a spot in the World Cup. Rabele emphasized the importance of winning this event, stating, “Our major assignment this year is to win the World Series to qualify for the World Cup.” While the participating teams have been confirmed, specific details about the competition are still pending.

Currently, local players are on a break and will resume training on January 10 as they prepare for their pre-season program. The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) is in discussions to host the World Series, although Chairman Akuila Masi noted that it may be financially challenging given their previous hosting of the Pacific Championship last October.

In a recent setback, the Bulikula lost to Samoa, narrowly falling 12-16 in a qualifying match held at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland on November 2, 2024. However, next year’s Women’s Rugby League World Cup will take place alongside the men’s and wheelchair tournaments in Australia, with some matches also being hosted by Papua New Guinea.

Australia has been a dominant force in rugby league, showcasing their strength with World Cup victories in 2013, 2017, and 2021.

This journey for the Bulikula reflects not just their ambition but also the growing recognition of women’s rugby league on the international stage. With a dedicated coaching staff and a clear vision, there is hope that Fiji’s women will continue to rise in the ranks and make their mark in the world of rugby.
