Fiji Bulikula aims for a notable achievement as they set their sights on qualifying for the 2025 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. Under the direction of head coach Josaia Rabele, the national women’s rugby league team is aspiring to break into the top eight rankings globally.
Last year, the Bulikula made impressive strides, climbing from 26th to 16th in the International Rugby League (IRL) rankings. This leap positions them ahead of notable countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and the Philippines, showcasing the growth of women’s rugby in Fiji. Rabele expressed positivity regarding this improved ranking, which reflects the team’s hard work and determination.
The upcoming World Series in October, to be hosted in Canada, will present a significant opportunity for the Bulikula, as they prepare to face tough competition from teams such as Ireland, Canada, and Nigeria. “Our major assignment this year is to win the World Series to qualify for the World Cup,” Rabele emphasized, highlighting the importance of this event for their World Cup aspirations.
The players are currently on a break, with training set to resume on January 10 for their pre-season program. While the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) had expressed interest in hosting the World Series, the financial implications following their recent hosting of the Pacific Championship may pose challenges.
In their previous attempt to qualify for the World Cup, the Bulikula faced a close challenge against Samoa, losing 12-16 at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, last November. The Women’s Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) next year will run alongside the men’s and wheelchair tournaments, taking place in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Australia’s dominance in the sport, marked by World Cup victories in 2013, 2017, and 2021, sets a high benchmark, but Fiji’s determination and recent progress signal a promising future for the Bulikula as they aim for success on the world stage.
This ambition reflects the broader growth of women’s sports and an increasing focus on providing equal opportunities. As the Bulikula prepares for their next challenges, their journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring female athletes in Fiji and beyond.
