Fiji’s national women’s rugby league team, known as the Bulikula, has set a significant goal for 2025: to qualify for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup and secure a top-eight ranking. This ambitious target is driven by head coach Josaia Rabele.

Last year, the Bulikula made impressive progress, jumping from 26th to 16th in the International Rugby League (IRL) rankings, surpassing nations such as Nigeria, Kenya, and the Philippines. Rabele expressed pride in this achievement and emphasized the team’s focus on upcoming challenges.

In October, the Bulikula will compete in the World Series in Canada, where they will face off against Ireland, Canada, and Nigeria. Winning this series is crucial for qualifying for the World Cup, as noted by Rabele, who highlighted the determination of his team.

While local players are currently on a break before resuming training in January for their pre-season preparations, the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) also expressed interest in hosting the World Series. Chairman Akuila Masi mentioned the financial considerations following the hosting of the Pacific Championship last year.

The previous World Cup qualifying match did not go in favor of the Bulikula, as they lost to Samoa with a close score of 12-16 at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland last November. The upcoming Women’s Rugby League World Cup will occur alongside the men’s and wheelchair tournaments, hosted by Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Australia has established itself as a dominant force in rugby league, having won the World Cup three times in the last decade. As the Bulikula embark on their journey towards the 2025 goal, their aspirations reflect a commitment to growth and competitiveness on the international stage.

This renewed ambition could foster greater interest and support for women’s rugby in Fiji, highlighting the potential for further development of the sport in the region. The team’s dedication and prior successes may well inspire other athletes and programs, contributing to the overall growth of rugby league in Fiji and beyond.
