Fiji Bulikula has set an ambitious goal for 2025: to qualify for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup and achieve a ranking within the top eight teams globally. This objective is spearheaded by head coach Josaia Rabele, who is enthusiastic about the team’s rising status in the international rankings.
In a remarkable achievement, the Bulikula team progressed from the 26th position to the 16th in the International Rugby League (IRL) standings last year. Rabele expressed pride in seeing Fiji rank higher than nations such as Nigeria, Kenya, and the Philippines, exemplifying the growth of women’s rugby in Fiji.
The Bulikula is gearing up for the World Series scheduled for October in Canada, where they will compete against Ireland, Canada, and Nigeria, marking a crucial step towards World Cup qualification. Rabele emphasized their primary mission for the year is to win the World Series.
While the local players are currently enjoying a break, they will resume training on January 10 for their pre-season preparations. Additionally, Rabele noted the Fiji National Rugby League’s (FNRL) ambition to host the World Series, although this comes with financial challenges, especially following their recent hosting of the Pacific Championship.
Reflecting on past performances, the Bulikula faced a narrow defeat to Samoa, losing 12-16 in the World Cup qualifying match held at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, on November 2, 2024. The upcoming Women’s Rugby League World Cup next year will occur alongside the men’s and wheelchair tournaments in Australia, with some matches also hosted by Papua New Guinea.
Australia’s dominance in the rugby league is well-established, having secured World Cup victories in 2013, 2017, and 2021, further highlighting the challenging landscape for emerging teams like Fiji.
In conclusion, the Fiji Bulikula’s journey reflects a positive trajectory in women’s rugby, inspired by their recent accomplishments and determination to succeed on the world stage. Their commitment to training and competition bodes well for the future and showcases the growing recognition of women’s sports globally. With hard work and dedication, the goal of World Cup qualification is within reach.
