The Fiji Bulikula is preparing for a challenging final against Fetu Samoa this Saturday in Auckland, New Zealand. This comes after their recent victory over the Cook Islands, where they secured an 18-6 win at the HFC Stadium in Suva.
The winner of this final will not only claim victory but will also automatically qualify for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. The runner-up will have the opportunity to compete in the World Series, facing off against other nations, including Ireland, in a qualifying tournament.
Captain Talei Holmes recognizes the formidable challenge that Samoa presents. “We know Samoa is a strong side all over the park just like our team,” she stated. Holmes expressed confidence in the coaching staff and in her team’s ability to prevail in the match.
She conveyed pride in leading the Bulikula to a home win in front of their families and fans, giving credit to the coaching staff for their excellent player selections that have contributed to their success this year. “I can feel it within the group, so I’m really proud of the girls,” she added.
Holmes praised the debutant players’ contributions during the match against the Cook Islands, stating, “They all stood up, and you could see that everyone gelled well together. I’m proud of the debutants; they deserve the win too.”
She also instructed her team to maintain focus and a strong defensive line after falling behind 6-0 to the Moana side, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and regaining momentum by scoring next.
Winger Vitalina Naikore was acknowledged for her standout performance, scoring a hat trick during the match. “We have such strong outside backs and strong middle, which contributed to our victory,” Holmes remarked, commending Naikore for her impressive skills on the field.
Head coach Josaia Rabele credited the support of Cronulla Sutherland Sharks women’s coach Tony Herman for aiding in their success, particularly in establishing effective defensive and offensive strategies. He also recognized the dedication of the rest of the coaching staff behind their Pacific Championship campaign.
Rabele encouraged the players to continue their aggressive attack and to utilize their wingers effectively, highlighting Naikore and Abigayle Sekitoga as exceptional talents. He expressed gratitude for the leadership of experienced players and their rapport with younger teammates, attributing this bond as a crucial strength throughout the competition.
Rabele concluded with appreciation for the sponsors and families supporting the team, acknowledging the challenges faced but also the resilience displayed to achieve the desired outcomes in their World Cup qualifying efforts.
