Fiji Bulikula Poised for Rugby League World Cup Qualifier with Star Players

Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is among eight players selected to represent the Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship, as announced by head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.

Rabele confirmed that scouting efforts in Australia led to the selection of these players, highlighting Lutu, who has made a significant impact with the Wests Tigers. The Campbelltown Junior, born in Suva, has rapidly advanced through the Tigers’ pathways, showcasing her skills as a formidable five-eighth. In 2022, she had a standout season, contributing to New South Wales’ success in the Under-19 State of Origin and helping the Wests Tigers clinch their first title in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. Lutu is contracted with the club until the end of the 2026 season.

Looking ahead, Rabele emphasized the importance of forming the best team as they prepare for a key match against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. He noted ongoing observations of local women’s matches to assess potential players for a squad that may eventually include up to 35 members.

Rabele is focused on ensuring a balanced team, aiming for 50 percent of the squad to be comprised of locally-based players. He also expressed optimism about having more time to identify and develop players, especially after the Fiji Bulikula was unable to participate in last year’s World Cup. The upcoming team is expected to be a blend of both experienced and emerging talents.
