Wests Tigers standout five-eighth Losana Lutu is among eight players selected to represent the Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. The announcement was made by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.
Rabele stated, “We traveled to Australia to scout players and have chosen eight for our squad, including the talented Losana Lutu.”
Originally from Suva, Lutu has quickly progressed through the Wests Tigers’ ranks, showcasing her skills as a five-eighth with a strong running game. She had a breakout season in 2022, contributing to New South Wales’ victory in the Under-19s State of Origin and helping the Wests Tigers secure a title in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. Lutu is contracted with the club until the end of the 2026 season.
Looking ahead, Rabele plans to select the strongest possible lineup for the qualifier against Cook Islands Moana, scheduled for October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. “We have been observing women’s games in the local competition,” Rabele, who previously led the Bati to the semi-finals of the 2008 RLWC, noted.
At present, Rabele is assembling a squad of 35 players. However, he must seek approval from the National Rugby League regarding the eligibility of the selected players. He emphasized that improvement is needed in the local competition but considers the upcoming qualifier a crucial match for the team.
Rabele is determined to lead his squad to the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup while carefully strategizing for the qualifiers. He mentioned that half of the 35-member squad is expected to consist of locally-based players, while the previous year was disappointing as Fiji Bulikula did not participate in the World Cup.
“This year presents a valuable opportunity to identify our players. The squad we will announce will feature a balanced mix of talent,” he added.
