The Fiji Bulikula is preparing for a challenging final against Fetu Samoa this Saturday in Auckland, New Zealand. This follows their recent victory over the Cook Islands, with a score of 18-6, at the HFC Stadium in Suva.
The winner of this final will earn automatic qualification for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, while the runner-up will have the opportunity to join the World Series, competing against teams like Ireland in another qualifying tournament.
Captain Talei Holmes recognizes the difficulty of the upcoming matchup. “We know Samoa is a strong side across the field, just like our team,” she stated. Holmes expressed confidence in the team’s coaching staff and her belief in their potential for success.
She felt honored to lead the Bulikula to a home victory in front of families and supporters. “Credit to our coaching staff for their selection and the amazing job they have done with us this year, which was evident on the field,” she noted, expressing pride in her team.
Holmes was particularly impressed by the performance of debutants in the match against the Cook Islands, praising their ability to gel as a unit. “They all stepped up, and I’m proud of the debutants because they deserve the win as well,” she added.
During the game, when trailing 6-0 against the Moana side, Holmes instructed her team to complete their sets and maintain a strong defensive line. She emphasized their determination not to give up, which led to them regaining momentum.
Holmes highlighted winger Vitalina Naikore’s outstanding performance, who scored a hat trick and played a crucial role in the victory. “We have strong outside backs, and that’s how we won the game; it was a collective effort,” she remarked.
Head coach Josaia Rabele expressed gratitude for the support of Cronulla Sutherland Sharks women’s coach Tony Herman, who assisted in developing their defensive and offensive strategies. He acknowledged the contributions of the entire coaching staff in the Pacific Championship campaign.
Rabele encouraged the players to maintain their aggressive attacking play and utilize the wingers effectively, praising Naikore and Abigayle Sekitoga as exceptional talents. He emphasized the strength of the team’s leadership, particularly the bond between experienced players and younger members.
He also thanked sponsors and families for their steadfast support, acknowledging the challenges faced but commending the girls for their perseverance in the World Cup qualifiers.
