Fiji Bulikula Boosted by Wests Tigers Star Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

Prominent Wests Tigers player Losana Lutu has been selected as one of eight athletes to represent Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele announced this development over the weekend, stating that the team scouted players in Australia and made their selections accordingly.

“Playing in Australia for the Wests Tigers is outstanding halfback Losana Lutu, who has been included in the roster,” Rabele said.

Lutu, originally from Suva and a product of the Campbelltown Junior program, has rapidly progressed through the ranks at Wests Tigers. Known for her strong running game as a five-eighth, she had a breakthrough year in 2022, where she played a pivotal role in New South Wales’ Under-19s State of Origin victory and won her first title with Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the end of the 2026 season.

As the team prepares for their match against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup Women, Rabele emphasized the need to form the best possible player combination.

“We’ve been observing women’s games in the local league,” said Rabele, who previously led the Fiji Bati to the semi-finals of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.

He noted that several potential players will be considered for the 35-player squad, pending approval from the National Rugby League regarding player eligibility.

Rabele acknowledged that there is still room for growth, particularly within the local competition. “The qualifier is crucial for us,” he remarked, affirming the team’s commitment to reaching the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup.

While awaiting clearance from the NRL, he has also included several secondary school athletes from the Lami Steelers in the qualifying squad, aiming for a blend of local and international talent.

Rabele pointed out that last year’s absence from the World Cup was a setback for the Fiji Bulikula. “This year presents a good opportunity for us to identify our players and build a strong team,” he concluded.
