The FIFA International “A” Friendlies Tri-Nations Series match against the Solomon Islands provided the Digicel Fiji Bula Boys with exactly what they needed. The intensity from their opponents inspired the Fijian team to perform well under the lights at HFC Bank Stadium on Monday night.
Tevita Waranaivalu secured the victory by scoring a penalty in the 81st minute, leading to a 1-0 win over the Solomon Islands in the chilly and windy conditions of Laucala Bay.
Head coach Rob Sherman praised his team’s effort but noted there is room for improvement. “It was a very close game against tough competition, which is precisely what we require,” he stated. “Despite the challenging conditions, the performance was commendable. We didn’t play to our full potential, but the boys demonstrated good character. Our goal was to secure a win, and we made necessary adjustments before the match.”
This match offers a preview of what to expect when the Fijians face the Solomon Islanders again next month during the World Cup qualifiers. The team has returned to the Fiji Football Academy in Ba to prepare for their upcoming match against Hong Kong-China.
The Bula Boys will play on Sunday at 3 PM at Churchill Park in Lautoka. Meanwhile, the Solomon Islands will take on Hong Kong-China on Thursday at 7 PM at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
