The FIFA International “A” Friendlies Tri-Nations Series match against the Solomon Islands proved to be exactly what the Digicel Fiji Bula Boys needed. The intensity presented by their opponents inspired the Fijian team to push themselves and perform under the stadium lights at HFC Bank Stadium on Monday night.
A penalty goal by Tevita Waranaivalu in the 81st minute secured a 1-0 victory for Fiji amidst cold and windy conditions in Laucala Bay. Head coach Rob Sherman praised his team’s effort but also noted that there was room for improvement.
“It was a very close game, good tough opposition which, to be honest, is what we need,” Sherman said. “It was a good performance under difficult circumstances. We didn’t play as fully as we wanted to, but nevertheless, the boys demonstrated good character. We aimed for a win, and we executed it after making some adjustments before the game.”
This match serves as a preview of the challenges the Fijians will encounter from the Solomon Islands when the teams meet again next month in the World Cup qualifiers. The Fiji team returned to the Fiji Football Academy in Ba for preparations for their next match against Hong Kong-China, scheduled for Sunday at 3 PM at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
Meanwhile, the Solomon Islands will take on Hong Kong-China this Thursday at 7 PM at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
