Fiji is hosting the inaugural Oceania Rugby high-performance camp for match officials in Nadi, marking a significant advancement in the development of officiating standards throughout the Oceania region. Supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) via its PacificAus Sports program, the camp aims to improve the skills, knowledge, and performance of match officials.
As a result of this initiative, Olympian referee Lavenia Racaca and newcomer Meresiana Savenaca have been appointed by Oceania Rugby to officiate at the Australian Championship on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. This appointment represents Meresiana’s first international assignment, presenting an exciting opportunity for this emerging referee. The presence of two female referees from Fiji operating at an elite level underscores the increasing influence of Fijian women in rugby officiating.
The camp, led by seasoned international referees and educators, serves as a vital opportunity for officials from the Pacific to enhance their officiating techniques and stay updated on the latest developments in the field. Participants take part in training sessions, workshops, and discussions designed to promote excellence and cohesiveness among match officials.
Oceania Rugby President Richard Sapias highlighted the significance of this camp, calling it a pivotal moment for rugby development in the region. “By launching this initiative in Fiji, we are reaffirming our commitment to supporting match officials and promoting excellence in rugby,” Sapias stated.
Additionally, the camp strives to create clear pathways for aspiring referees, ensuring a strong foundation for the future of the sport in the Pacific.
