Fiji is poised for a season marked by increased rainfall and warmer temperatures, influenced by a weak La Niña phenomenon in the Pacific. The Fiji Meteorological Service has indicated that this month’s rainfall is anticipated to exceed normal levels in the Western and Central Divisions, while conditions in the Northern and Eastern Divisions, as well as Rotuma, are expected to range from normal to above-normal rainfall.
These wet conditions are expected to persist through March, heightening the risk of flooding in low-lying regions. Historically, La Niña has been associated with enhanced rainfall during Fiji’s wet season, and this year is no exception with temperatures also projected to remain above average.
Both daytime and nighttime temperatures across the islands are forecasted to be higher than usual. As the cyclone season is currently underway, the forecast suggests the possibility of one to two cyclones affecting the region. The Weather Office cautions that even weather systems that are weaker could still bring significant rainfall.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions and take proactive measures to prepare, such as clearing drains and securing their properties, to mitigate potential impacts from flooding or severe weather events. These preparations can help ensure safety and resilience in the face of nature’s challenges.
