The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a warning regarding impending wet and windy conditions as a trough of low pressure moves southward over the Fiji group. As detailed in a weather bulletin released today at 5:30 am by the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi, this system is expected to bring cloud cover and rainfall, accompanied by prevailing easterly winds.
The forecast highlights that easterly winds could gust up to 45 kilometers per hour, particularly affecting the eastern regions of Kadavu and its neighboring smaller islands, along with the eastern portions of Viti Levu, which extends from Sigatoka through Navua to Korovou and into Rakiraki. Similarly, the eastern halves of Taveuni and Vanua Levu, including areas from Southern Bua through Savusavu to Buca Bay and Tunuloa, are likely to experience these conditions as well.
Additionally, the Yasawa, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups will also face strong winds and rough sea conditions. The forecast indicates occurrences of occasional rain across multiple regions, with predictions of isolated thunderstorms and heavy rainfall particularly concentrated over Vanua Levu, Taveuni, the interior, and eastern parts of Viti Levu, including Kadavu, Lau, and Lomaiviti. Other areas may see partly cloudy conditions interspersed with afternoon or evening showers, with isolated heavy downpours possible.
The weather office has alerted the public to the risks associated with persistent localized heavy rain, which could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas. Residents are urged to stay alert and take necessary safety precautions.
This evolving weather pattern not only underscores the importance of community preparedness but also serves as a reminder of nature’s significant influence on daily life in Fiji. By keeping informed and vigilant, residents can better navigate potential challenges posed by heavy rain and thunderstorms in the coming days.
