The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is dealing with an operational setback following a mechanical failure at the Waimanu Raw Water Pump Station. The malfunction has resulted in a 20 percent reduction in raw water inflows to the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant, decreasing from 75 million liters per day to 60 million liters. WAF’s Mechanical and Electrical team is diligently working overnight to replace the defective pump with a spare overhauled unit. Efforts are underway to restore full operation by today, though the timeline for repairs is subject to change.

The ongoing challenge is further compounded by dry weather conditions, which have led to reduced inflows from Headworks 3 and Savura. WAF warns that if dry conditions persist, it may prolong recovery times for reservoir levels, resulting in extended periods of low water pressure.

The affected regions include the areas supported by the Tamavua, Nagatugatu, Tacirua, Dokanisuva, Coloisuva, Flagstaff, Shipping, Toorak, and Nasinu reservoirs. Residents in these areas are advised to conserve water, limit non-essential usage, and remain updated through WAF’s online platforms.

WAF emphasizes the importance of community cooperation during this challenging period and encourages residents to store adequate water for essential purposes. Assistance is available to those affected, with contact reachable via phone or email. The commitment of WAF to resolving these technical setbacks swiftly remains steadfast, ensuring a hopeful outlook for returning to reliable water services as repairs progress. Additionally, WAF’s proactive management strategies, including water carting services, aim to mitigate impacts, particularly for essential services such as healthcare facilities and schools, as highlighted in previous similar situations.
