The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a warning indicating that Tropical Depression 09F is expected to intensify into a category one tropical cyclone as it approaches Fiji waters this evening. Director Misaeli Funaki predicts that the system will further escalate to a category two cyclone by tomorrow.
The trajectory of the storm appears to target the eastern regions of Fiji, particularly the Northern Division, Lau Group, and Lomaiviti Islands. Funaki has urged residents to prepare, especially those in these eastern areas as well as those in Vanua Levu and on the windward sides of the islands.
Anticipated weather changes include heavy rainfall leading to possible flooding, coupled with increasing wind speeds throughout the night into tomorrow. Funaki highlighted the dangers associated with category one and two cyclones, warning that they can uproot loose structures and create hazardous flying debris, elevating the risk of severe flooding in low-lying areas and around major rivers.
Preparation is also emphasized for mariners, who are advised to avoid sailing during this tumultuous period. The government and community leaders remind the public that unity and mutual support can significantly help in navigating the challenges posed by such severe weather, echoing the resilience seen during previous storms like TD01F, which had similar impacts on the region.
As the storm approaches, it is crucial for communities to stay informed and execute their emergency plans effectively, reinforcing the spirit of togetherness that often shines through in difficult times. By preparing adequately, residents can hope to weather this storm with minimal impact, coming together in solidarity and strength as they face nature’s challenges.
